MOVIE: Searching (Film Review)

www.google.com

Although it’s a bit late to review this film as we’ve seen it only yesterday, (blame it on Sir Sonkie, hindi kami nanalo sa DFI competition haha, peace!), I don’t want to miss the opportunity of rewarding this film an outstanding review.

Honestly, when I first read the synopsis of the film “Searching, I feel like there is nothing extra ordinary with the storyline. David Kim played as John Cho ( I still remember him from American Pie) a typical husband and father who eventually lost her wife, became distant with his teen age daughter Margot, who became attached to internet and Social media, gained “friends” online whom she doesn’t know personally, got tricked by this “friend, and then gone missing. Very basic, very simple. There is nothing new, seems like I am just watching TV Patrol headline news.  But really, what makes this film stands out among other thriller movies?

Visual deliverance. Every viewer wants the movie to be “realistic” even though it is not. In this film, the approach they did on the visual effects and screenplays are totally different. Throughout the movie, our sight is focus on how they started their family, as well as the birth of the social media. From the start up sound of Windows 95 (which is kinda nostalgic), you will see at the “corner” of the desktop the Norton Antivirus and those simple uncomplicated ways of navigating the system. Until, Youtube, Facebook, Instagram and Tumblr are gradually introduced. And honestly, it delivers a more realistic connection to the audience because we became “part” of their social life.

Engaging plot. Boredom is the product if a certain movie gives too much information or having too much conversation. Searching is exactly the opposite. You will crave for more details each time David Kim reveals his discoveries. You will get curious which Margot’s social media account is he going to unfold, or which friend he is going to interrogate next. And literally, you will wait of what he is going to write down on the iMessage as you don’t want to miss anything.

Emotions. The movie was intended to be seen by the movie goers only through the lens. That is, 90% of the 90minute film, you will see the characters just seating, chatting, typing message, reading emails and stuff which has something to do with social media. You will never find anything about elaborated interior designs, fashionable clothes, or high end cars. Just the facial expression. And every character delivered more than what we expected. Very natural and sometimes with a bit of awkwardness, yet so powerful they conquered the viewers. That’s how effective they are.

All in all, the film’s smart and effective plot gives a full satisfaction, unleashing a strong cultural relevance (advantage and disadvantage) of the internet. Although there is a slight similarity with the 2014’s Unfriended as they both use the internet as the platform, Searching diversified some ideas by  including immediate family members and not just a teenage genre film. And the conclusion is so reliable it left a great impact wherein you will only remember how the parents defend and protect their children in a different perspective.

An extra ordinary craft made by an extra ordinary team.
Your 150minutes will never be wasted.

FOOD: Free Pizza Dinner at Paper Moon

A month ago when we actually won a meal, however due to busyness in life (char!) we only got time to claim it last weekend. And so the moment we stepped in at Paper Moon Doha Restaurant, it seems like I was stepping into my Mom’s kitchen only with Italian ambiance. Oh yes! That's how I labeled the nice atmosphere in there.

I am not a good cook, In fact I don’t cook at all, lol! But me surrounded by people who considered  kitchen as their playground, I must say I already tasted some of the best recipes, ever. And just as Ahmed (our guy for the evening) served our sumptuous dinner – Penne Carbonara, Grilled Salmon plus the Scamorza Affumicata Pizza, I knew that temptation’s gonna kill my diet that night.

Salmone Con Purea di Patate E Finocci E Batuto Alle olive

I ordered for a plain penne carbonara as I always want to taste the rawness of its sauce. Surprisingly, It actually exceeded my expectations. Even if there are no other ingredients except for grated Parmesan cheese on top of its creamy paste doesn’t make it lesser than any other pasta in town. The cream is soft yet so thick, covering the penne. For me, it looks like a masterpiece. And so while my fork was busy dipping into my tasteful cheesy pasta, my husband’s also engaged with his mouthwatering grilled salmon where you can see the juiciness of the meat in every slice. Yup, sometimes there’s a good reason for couple not to talk. Don’t talk when your mouth is full haha!

Scamorza Affumicata Pizza
So here’s the finale, the Scamorza (Italian for Cow’s milk cheese) Affumicata. With the strong aroma of smoked cheese and sliced eggplant fresh from the oven and reaches our nose right before it reaches our table, I highly recommend that you should try this one. The taste of scamorza is so dominant but not “nakakaumay”. This is something new to us, and I think I’d like to try it once more when we go back to Paper Moon.

Good food doesn’t have to be just consumed and eat, most of the time, you have to experience it.
Thank you Ahmed and Firat for giving us a good dinner.

And for those of you who wants to have a heaven-like food encounter, you can visit Papermoondoha at Jaidah Square Bldg, (behind Jarir Bookstore). you can call them at 4016 6000 and they will give you a 5star dining experience with or without reservation.

Te Freddo Al limone (Lemon Iced Tea)
Mojito
By the way, don't forget to finish your meal with their unstoppable Mojitos and Lemon Iced tea.

MOVIE: Mile 22 (Film Review)

Sorry Guys for the late post :(

Another Movie premiere from the generous @novocinemas_qtr & @gulffilm. @mile22movie stars Mark Wahlberg as Jimmy Silva, John Malkovich, Iko Uwais, my personal favorite @laurencohan & Ronda Rousey, which follows a story of elite but “Ghost” members of CIA task force that has to escort a high-priority asset 22miles to an extraction point.

The opening was set in an undisclosed location in Russia, wherein a raid is about to happen. Team Head John Malkovich as “The Mother” watched over his team from another undisclosed location.

The next scene was changed to an Asian country, with Li Noor played by Uwais is about to surrender to American Govt in one condition: a safe passage to the U.S. okay, here comes Jimmy Silva and his “Overwatch Team” assigned to Escort and protect Li Noor. From there, threats & bombs, & goons & guns are waiting for them on their way to their egress point.

Okay, I’ll tell you the good side first. The storyline really attracts my attention. I am not into action films (just no other choice because of my husband haha!), the twist & the idea, although not perfect, but for me it is a breath of fresh air. Plus, No dull moments, no long conversation, & fast-paced. Literally an action film.

Now, let’s go to the bad points. First, shaky shots. Looks like a semi Blairwitch Project of 2018 in a bad way. 2nd, Jimmy’s fast talks are too much. The film will definitely survive on its own even without those monologues. 3rd, I was expecting more from the characters but they were underutilized. 4th, that “to be continued” style which left viewers hanging with the question “What the heck happened?! Is not so good to end the story.

But here’s the thing, since I enjoyed Mile22, I recommend it with 3/5 stars. Just be open minded & dont expect a Mission Impossible or John wick level. Nope. not even close. But I must say, Mile22 is entertaining. If you have no other things to do, you can spend two hours watching its decent storyline.

MOVIE: The Nun (Film Review)

Movie Premiere Invites

From the ever generous @dohafestcity , @voxcinemasqatar & Virgin Megastore, we were again opportune to attend the movie premiere of this weekend’s horror film The Nun, the 5th film of the Conjuring Franchise, which takes us back to the demonic story of Valak. Director Corin Hardy uses a monastery as his cradle for the entire movie. & while the shadowy creepy face of Valak is all over the trailer, you will be surprised of novitiate Sister Irene’s (played by Taissa Farmiga) fresh & innocent look, giving the film a canny feeling & a lot engaging than the previous franchises. TRIVIA: Taissa Farmiga is Vera’s younger sister, the actress who played Lorraine Warren in The Conjuring 1&2.

Accompanied by Father Burke, they were sent by Vatican City to Romania to investigate a mysterious suicide. Escorted by a local commoner Frenchie who witnessed the incident, they went to abbey & look for answers. Along the way, the three experience different evil things. With the help of eerie settings, dark woods & gloomy images, you will feel something creepy is gonna happen. Well of course, it’s what we are waiting for, something will appear from nowhere & will scare us big time.

What I love the most about The Nun is its effectiveness. It feels like Valak is really in front you & her hollow eyes are looking into your soul. Not to mention the amazing 4DX experience (we experienced the same at the movie premiere of Pacific Rim: Uprising), which helps the storyline more realistic. There’s a wow factor for me when Sister Irene & the other nuns are uttering non-stop Latin prayer. But what Really hooked me is the technique they used albeit simple yet effective enough to frightened us even by just seeing the first scene. No confusing subplots, very minimal flashbacks, & no appearances of actors from other franchises.

All i can say is Amidst marvel’s superheroes & star wars flying objects, THE NUN IS A REAL GAME CHANGER! 👍

MOVIE: The Equalizer 2 (Film Review)

https://dhalahorecinema.com/amy-movie/the-equalizer-2/

We were so excited to watch Equalizer 2, not only because it’s an action film for my hubby, but I must say, its prequel was a must a see movie. And hey, who would say no to Denzel Washington, whose character is a Former Marine and Defense Intelligence Agency spy named Robert McCall now lives in a diverse apartment complex in urban Massachusetts

https://variety.com/2018/film/reviews/the-equalizer-2-review-denzel-washington-1202876440/
The first part looked promising. A low-profile commoner with unique skills and charming personality will save    though the next scene seems disconnected, and the next scene, and then the next and another next.  What happened was every chunk of the movie looks admirable yet once you combine them altogether, the result was a bit messy. So many subplots involved which gave you a 2-eating-popcorn-hours. But If you will just focus on the main plot it will only take 1hour I guess. I really don’t fathom the intensity of the story if it’s all about his life as lyft driver, or just someone who has a sufficient abilities and be a hero.

I also didn’t feel the so called highlight of the film. The Tom-n-Jerry chasing scene amidst a hurricane didn’t save the film as it looks unnatural and unnecessary.

Antoine Fuqua is such a great director as he’s the same person behind The Training Day, also stars dashing Denzel Washington. But maybe this is not their glorious collaboration this year.

Not this one.
