FACT: The Airport, The Lamp and The Bear

Lot 32, Sale 2440 Urs Fischer (b. 1973)
Untitled (Lamp/Bear)
Price Realized: $6,802,500
(x 3.6435 in USD = 24,784,908.75QAR)
(x 11.80 in PHP = 292,461,923.20 PHP)

Untitled (Lamp/Bear) brightly celebrates the objects that define a young child’s life. Artist Urs Fischer realized this striking sculpture on a monumental scale, combining a canary yellow teddy bear, everyone’s cherished childhood keepsake, with a bedroom desk lamp. The lamp neatly bisects the bear, casting a shadow over its face, while a forlorn black button eye peers out from underneath. The bear’s inanimate body flops forward, lovingly care worn, resting against the support of the lamp stand. The first out of a series of two works, the sculpture starkly defies its facture. Fischer made the bear in Untitled (Lamp/Bear), not out of softly comforting fur and foam, but out of bronze, a rich material that reflects the personal value a young owner places upon a toy.

The sculpture evokes permanence, weighing close to seventeen tons, contrasting with much of the artist’s oeuvre to date, such as his ephemeral Untitled (Bread House) (2004-2005). The giant lamp is a functioning beacon that lightens up outdoor space at night, defining its surroundings and illuminating the giant teddy bear. This playful and humorous work depicts an everyday object surreally, uncannily. It parallels Jeff Koons’s public monuments, such as Koons’s monumental Puppy (1992) - housed in the forum outside the Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao - or his Celebration series of balloon animals blown up to fantastic proportions. Untitled (Lamp/Bear) was exhibited to great acclaim at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam. It is the most significant work by the artist to be offered at auction to date.

THOUGHTS: 4th Eid Day is Dhow Cruise Day

It's 4th Day of Eid, and my last day of Holiday, sigh... So we decided to make the day worth waiting for. My buddy hubby actually joined his KEO colleagues when they planned to experience Dhow  Cruise a week before the long Eid holiday. And because we haven't tried it yet, we gave it a shot. we said yes. and everything is settled.

Call time is 7:00 in the morning at their office near Toyota Signal. I woke up so maaga (6AM!!!). In "my reality" 6:00 in the morning is my 3:00 in the wee hours of morning. Madaling araw pa lang saken yun, and Pardz know that ever since hehehe. But because wala namang choice ang Lola nyo, got no other choice but to - "Bangon, Banyo, Bihis, Bira!" hahaha! Kesa maiwan pa kami ng grupo, sayang din diba. :) All in all, we are 28 in the group, plus 7 (charge free) kids. we paid One adult pays 145.00QAR including food.

At 7:30AM, we're already at the Corniche. 15 minutes more and we're good to go, or sail rather. At dahil maaga pa literally, punta agad ang lolo at lola nyo sa balcony hehehe (kaya eto, sunog ako ngayon Lmao!). We spent almost 1 hour before we reached the small island. There, we had picnic, picture taking (na hindi pwedeng mawala) swimming (though hindi kami nagswim, nakakahiya kasi sa sasakyan, nakihitch lang kami, babasain pa nmin hehe!) We stayed in the island unti 12:30 noon. Mejo mainit na so, kelangan nang gumora ang grupo. :) At 2:00 in the afternoon, we are already home.

It was fun. another experience, although mejo mainit pa, pero worth trying. :) Besides, we got nothing to do, sayang ang holiday kung hindi mo susulitin. Some says, it's a bit expensive. But we didn't mind. We are after the experience and meeting new people and have some fun. Money will come and go, and come, and go. But experiencing things and have fun with it, IT'S PRICELESS.

And that was my holiday is all about.
The Dhow Cruise Churva, may balcony, xoxal na xoxal hahaha

THOUGHTS: 3rd Eid Day 03 is Exhibit Day

Damien Steven Hirst (born 7 June 1965) is an English artist, entrepreneur and art collector. He is the most prominent member of the group known as the Young British Artists (or YBAs), who dominated the art scene in Britain during the 1990s. He is internationally renowned, and is reportedly Britain's richest living artist, with his wealth valued at £215m in the 2010 Sunday Times Rich List. And yes, he is here in Qatar.

The exhibition, Hirst’s largest to date and his first in the Middle East, opened in 10th OCtober at the Museum of Islamic Art’s Al Riwaq Doha gallery.

Death is a central theme in Hirst's works. He became famous for a series of artworks in which dead animals (including a shark, a sheep and a cow) are preserved—sometimes having been dissected—in formaldehyde. The best known of these being The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living, a 14-foot (4.3 m) tiger shark immersed in formaldehyde in a vitrine (clear display case). He has also made "spin paintings," created on a spinning circular surface, and "spot paintings", which are rows of randomly coloured circles created by his assistants.

These are only few of his artworks. You can see more so I HIGHLY RECOMMEND to visit the gallery as You still have lots of time to see this once in a lifetime exhibit from a great artist.

NOTABLE INFORMATION FROM WIKIPEDIA:Hirst gained the European record for the most expensive work of art by a living artist—his Lullaby Spring in June 2007, when a 3-metre-wide steel cabinet with 6,136 pills sold for 19.2 million dollars to Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, the Emir of Qatar.
